What’s the reason for the shim? When I first received my rebuilt 8BA 6 yrs ago I had issues w the one the builder used. I bought a new one & reassembled based on pics I took. Thinking it was never assembled correctly as the radial shim was installed under the bolts instead of between the crank & flywheel. As a machinist I don’t see the reason for the shim behind or in front of the flywheel? Is it really performing any function?

The plate is intended to retain the dowel pins when assembled to the outside.
