Can anyone with roadster post picture or explain a fix for keeping the windshield from blowing open....back to steering wheel? Put on a new windshield/stanchions/rubber,etc... at about 35 she starts to blow backwards!
I am using new wingnut washers/new stanchions/new cups and new cones. I'm thinking that new equals tooo smooth/slippery...need roughed up...?? I remember , on the old barn, that there were roadster owners with solutions to this problem...problem is didn't have windshield back when and can not remember any of suggested solutions! Generally it is the cones and/or the stanchion cups that are worn. Correct those, and make sure the wingnut washers are installed and you should be fine.

You must have something really wrong for it to do that. With the rubbers installed in the windshield frame, on my 28, the window only goes out. It would be impossible to even push the window beyond the frame so it would be inside the car. The rubbers go down both sides, on the stantions, and across the bottom, on the windshield frame, and belong on the outside of the car. They fit into a groove in the windshield frame, and I suppose, without the rubbers, the window could swing both ways, but if the rubbers are in, it will not go past the stantions or the dash rail. I have trouble keeping it open, (out) at 35 mph.

I've had the same problem - all new parts - windshield still blew in. Finally drilled and tapped inside stanchion and inserted a stud. Then covered stud with rubber cap. It works perfectly - however, this is not a show car.

Many of the repo wing nuts bottom out before clamping the windshield. Put a washer on the pivot stud between the wing nut and stantion. My stanndard windshield does not blow in now that I have the washers in place.

Before I fixed it, our Roadster Pickup displayed this problem. Any breezy day, when we were reaching along with the wind crossing the road from left-to-right, we could expect the windshield to blow back past the gaskets. But expected or not, it was always a surprise to get the wind in our laps. The real culprit was the wind shadow and subsequent blast from on-coming semis.
I cut "the solution" from an old innertube. The donut-shaped washers fit between the cones and the windshield. Make 'em almost big enough to show when you tighten everything down. Any old innertube will do the trick, but original Firestone-red tubes work best. ![]() However, don't trust the rubber to hold the windshield open at the bottom for ventilation. For that, use a 1/2-empty water bottle between the windshield frame and the jamb. Stick it in right behind the gas cap. It flexes a little and makes a really agonized noise, but it keeps your tummy cool! And it is a very convient drink-holder. Or, if you aren't a purist, do a little woodworking for a more elegant solution for your commercial. The following idea was stolen from another guy with the same "opportunity. He did not apply for a patent. |

Brent mentioned the wing nut washers so I added 2 to each side and what a difference, Ted was right on the wing nut bottoming out so I added the washers, but I do like Bruce's Idea that I will follow thru with..Its hard to get the wing nuts finger tight but they do tighten up and hold the window open, this has been as tight as I ever had..so with the extra washers and Bruce's Idea I beleive problem solved. Too cold to try out so I'll have to wait till spring..thanks to all for the Ideas and help...Can't wait till spring..its been cold back here in West Virginia.

Yup, that's what I'm talking about...solutions, thanks! Hey, can you sell me some of those little red rubber washers ![]() For youse that haven't READ my question closely...have new washers installed. However, will add a second layer of washers..to see what! About the depth of the wingnuts(bottoming out theory). I used original windnuts, due to thinking the same theory, but will do some detailed RE-measuring. Bruce I'm not paying you no royalty for somthin you 'borrowed' ![]() And, as far as 'trying it out'...due to inclement weather, hmm 80 degrees here for week now and no sign of slowing..whew ![]() |
