Default Tires

Considering buying new tires for my '31 Fordor. Question is should it be Goodyear or Firestone? I have always thought that the Goodyears will fit into a fender well without deflating. Is that true or false? Also who to buy them from? I would also like to buy new tubes with the metal stems>
Thanks for your time.

Joe, my experience has been that both 19" tires will fit in a fender with an original wheel well. Therein lies the problem in that most 'restorer-installed' wheel wells are not the correct size & shape.

My experience is also that the Goodyears do last longer than the Firestones.

I prefer the ride of a Goodyear. They are smooth riding and quiet. And they look great.

The 19 inch Goodyear has a profile including rolling circumference that is very close to the original size whereas the 19 inch Firestones are more than 6 percent larger. That translates to a much more accurate speedometer and odometer reading for the Goodyear tires. Assuming, of course, that your speedometer drive gear matches the rear axle ratio. Gar Williams

Goodyears all the way for me! I have side mounts and no problem with fit. They are wearing very well also.

My Firestones did not last more then a few thousand miles. This was just a few years ago.
