Default 1939 Woody

What would a fair value be for a very nice original 39 Woody ? This car has been collector owned for many many years. It has never been Hot Rodded and still has it's original sheetmetal (no patches or rust ever), very nice original upholstery, the drivetrain is original (it does not have a Columbia axle), the original wood is perfect as is most of the original glass. The car has not been started in more than 20 years. Consider the necessary work to make it a driver.

Do you know if it's a DeLuxe or a Standard body? There are two '39 DeLuxe Wagons listed in the January issue of the Woodie Times. First is described as 75% restored listed for $49K. The second is fully restored a decade ago for $95K. If it's as nice as you describe I would get it running and make the brakes safe and drive it as a survivor.

My 36 recent restoration with new paint and original refinished wood has been out there coming up on 6 months. Some interest but no sale so far at $45k

Greg has had this one for sale maybe a year or more:

I'd guess $30k on what you describe depending on condition. Woody market is soft.

A bones brings up a good point. Why has the car not run in 20 years? If it was parked because of engine issues, it will impact the cost. A total rebuild for a flathead will be expensive.

This car is a Deluxe model and has been stored indoors since new. The owner past away and left it to his son who left it to his son when he past away. I agree that it should be cleaned, maintained and driven as a survivor.

Desireable year and body style but as has been stated here the woody market has tanked.
I know of several that were well over 100K 5 years ago that can't get a 50K bid now.
Building one from the ground up would be 75K+.
The hobby is changing.

The young folks are of a smaller populous generation and the interest in antique autos is not as high among their ranks as is was with previous larger generations.

Lower prices will be good for buyers but not for owners and restorers.

If it has been stored for 20 years, you can count on replacing the wheel cyl, master cyl, acid cleaning the gas tank and maybe unsticking the engine. Hopefully the coolant is still in the radiator and not in the oilpan and cylinders. I believe the 39 engine has sand plugs on the pan rails which are prone to leak with extended storage. Still yet, none of these items are hard to fix other than a stuck engine.
