Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
I was looking into buying one of these to help handle the addition of halogen lights and some other items . When I looked at powermasters list of generator by years I noticed they do not show one for 1932 ,
It shows them offering one for 1939-1948. Would I be able to use that on a 1932 or are they not interchangeable? I’m trying to stay away from using a regular alternator due to the look I’m going for . |

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
It is a bit more expensive, but Whitney rebuilds your original generator into an alternator. I really like the look myself.

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
The original generator mounted on a post. Are you using the original intake manifold? If it was me I would just get a later 2 brush generator and have it rebuilt. I would assume you could get by with the original generator, what are your "other items", an electric heater? How many amps do the halogen lights use, what about LED's?

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
If you buy a regulator for it instead of the diode there now it´s a step up...just saying...
The charging now is regulated by moving the third brush and very few wants to go out under the hood and start wrenching when you want to turn the headlights on... |

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
Can the Powermaster stand the stress of the fan being mounted to the front of it? Didnt know if that front bearing would handle the thrust.

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
While were on the subject, has any one used one of these with a original generator mounted fan? I've talked to a couple of the people building these alternators that told me I could not run a fan on one. I'm not sure why, are the bearings too small?

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
The unit I posted (Whitney) uses the original front and rear endplates. Have you talked to Whitney? You have to send them your generator to be modified.

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
I have one (12V) on the 59AB in my 32.
I wanted 12V, and actually have a converted early Ford generator, but wanted the simplified wiring from the Powermaster. I used a Speedway wide belt fan adapter and stock Ford fan. I only have about 250 miles on it, but so far no problems. PM says no problem using it as is. Last edited by hotrodA; 09-27-2018 at 10:56 AM. |

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
I always thought there was a reason that the Powermaster is not listed for use on any early engines with generator fans even though it would fit. I went with a Whitney alternator with Ford bearings meant to support the thrust from a fan.

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
I wouldn,t use a powermaster generator as a wheel chock, let alone run it on my car.
I did once and learnt an expensive lesson |

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
Aussiesteve ,Why ? very expensive wheel chock. We have done near 20000 miles on two of them with no issues. But no fan mounted on them either. Using an 8BA style fan mount .

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
anouther Friend of mine had a GM alternator with a Speedway pulley to run a fan on a 36 pickup. we went for a maiden voyage, with a fresh 59 A motor, when we got to 50 mph there was a bad vibration.we drove home, the first thing i did was drop the fan belt vibration gone. then took off the fan, and that was it. i think the GM alternators or the Power master can't handle a fan...

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
I have a 12 volt Powermaster unit from Speedway on my avatar - 7+ years, 50k + miles, and at sustained speeds between 65-85 mph, still running just fine ......
My fan runs up front if the generator off of a fan hub on a separate pulley

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
Powermaster specifically states to not use their product on an installation with a generator mounted fan. I suspect the bearings and shaft are not sized for the additional stress imparted by the fan.
The EJ Whitney units would be a different matter, since they are using the original generators as cores for conversion. One would need to consult with them regarding fan mounting.

Re: Anyone using a powermaster generator ?
Luke: Is this going on your hot rod that you are working to put the McCulloch on? If so the generator mounts behind the supercharger and the fan is not an issue.
