Okay, this may sound goofy but here is what I am doing. I am making something like a model T speedster with as many parts as possible from old John Deeres. The front and rear axles are model A ford. There is a precedent for this as Deere used a model A transmission and steering column in one of their tractors.

The engine I am using is a flat head two cylinder vertical capable of only about 14 horse at 1500 rpm. Anyway I got the steering, clutch and accelerator and a makeshift seat hooked up the other day and drove it out of the shop. It is scary fast! I was hoping to be able to put around tractor shows in low gear at maybe 5 -10 mph but there is no way to hold this thing down that slow.
I bought the rear axle from a model A restorer years ago and I have no idea what it came off of so I have to assume it has the standard 3.78 ratio.
Other than trying to find a 4.33 or 4.55 ring gear is there anything else I can do to slow it down?

Pull one spark plug wire.

I wouldn't be opposed to putting in an entirely new rear axle since the brakes on the present one are going to need virtually every part replaced. Doing a little googling it looks like these rear ends are from 5.4 to 7. something ratios, which would be better.
Questions:
1. Is the drive shaft assembly similar to a car, will they bolt to a regular 3 speed.
2. Will model A passenger wheels bolt on?

Use a AA truck 4-speed transmission.

How difficult would it be to replace the three speed with a four speed?

Very interesting, don't know of any John Deere that used any Model A parts.

The model Y built in 1936. Only 26 built.

Bolts to the same engine, I know of several standard model A pickups that have a 4 speed in them, im not sure if they had to shorten the rear end any or not - i dont think they did...

it did just bolt in though.

I don't know what the torque is. It's 3.5 x 4 bore and stroke two cylinder. Runs to 1850 rpm. I was afraid it wouldn't have enough power to pull the thing and it's so fast it's scary for what I want to do with it.

Thank you for the reference! Learned something new today. With only 40-some made and then "un-made" within a couple of years, it's small wonder that even most Deere collectors aren't familiar with it.
