Default Sooted plugs on 39 Pickup

Got 39 Ford Pickup. ( 85HP) Belongs to my 90 year old Dad. It has had to sit as lot the last year. Prior to that it ran like a champ. Changed plugs recently. Only driven about 30 miles. Drove it Sat with Dad at my side. He was all smiles but it began to buck and jump. Got it back home, took out the plugs and they are all black with soot. Had to pour a little gas into carb to get it started ( I forgot that part). Any ideas on why they got sooted so quick. Carb has been rebuilt prior to car sitting for almost a year. He broke his hip is why it sat so long.
