Hi guys
My 39 is pretty much stock. It has a 59ab engine. On road no problem. Shifts beautiful. While in 1st gear pulling into garage and letting slowly off clutch, the car shudders or chatters. No grinding or anything like that and if I give a heavier throttle it doesn’t do it. The car does not have chatter rods. Do I need them?

30-9,
They will probably help, no doubt. Are your motor and trans mount biscuits tightened and in good shape ? I have sets of these anti- chatter rods with the frame to rod screws. Charlie ny [email protected] |

Sounds like a clutch problem...

Maybe, but it is much easier to check the engine and transmission mounts first.

Try adjusting your clutch to 1" to 1 1/4" free play.

I know mounts are in good shape. If not too cold tomorrow, I’ll check how tight and report back.

If Henry didn't think the car needed them he wouldn't have put them in there in the first place.
They are there to stop the engine moving forward and back under acceleration and braking and to stop clutch judder. |

39 is the last year with a direct pedal to clutch lever linkage. You definitely need clutch anti chatter rods. Your car is juddering (chattering). You don't have any anti chatter rods. You have proved the need for them.

Hi
As mentioned I have a later than 39 (59 EAB) engine. That’s probably why I don’t have them. Can I / should I still install? As also mentioned it never happens on road when giving a good amount of throttle, only when pulling very slowly in 1st into garages Thanks and sorry if dumb question

Ford USA discontinued the use of the rods when they changed the design of the rear engine mount just before the war. The problem is that the torque tube pushes at the transmission with a pretty good force and worn or mushy mounts allow too much movement. There are some that feel Ford should have kept the engine radius rods thru 1948. There were kits available that bolt to the half bell with the transmission and attach to the frame. There are previous threads about this somewhere on this forum. This is one. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...7619&showall=1
