39 trans in an original 32 frame and pedal assembly. When the clutch arm is not hooked to the linkage the throw out bearing is about an inch from the clutch fingers. After all linkage is hooked up and adjusted about how far should it be. Also I have a new clutch return spring and brake return spring. One is stronger than the other and I forgot witch was witch

Not sure I understand what you want to know, when the linkage is connected the throwout bearing will be very close or floating lightly against the clutch fingers. If you could adjust for some gap, not sure that is possible but I don't know what your set-up looks like, you wouldn't want a large gap because it would use up your pedal travel without engaging the clutch. I adjust mine by feel, snug it up to remove all the travel, and back it off a little so there is just bit of free-play. Then I drive it and see how it feels.

If you don't have a matching pedal assembly and arm on the clutch release shaft on the transmission, the adjustment could be tricky. You obviously should be able to shift/engage gears with the pedal depressed, but there should also be a little free play when the engine is at speed. The flyweights on the clutch tighten up the pressure on the clutch as RPMs increase and the fingers shouldn't touch the throw-out bearing. I think I would start with a '32 release arm on the transmission to match your pedal assembly.

have you got the body on, so you know where the pedal sits at rest?

I have the firewall installed so I can see where it should be at rest. Have a 32 release arm and 32 pedal assembly. I think I got it now after reading the replies. I think I will do my initial setting for about an inch of pedal freeplay. Then adjust as necessary.

Now about the springs. I have two new springs for the clutch and brake return. I think the light one is for the brakes and the heavy one for the clutch. If I am wrong please set me strait.

The Throw out bearing should be adjusted for about a .100" (tenth) from the pressure plate fingers, which should result in 1 1/4" or so pedal free play. The T/O bearing should never be in contact with the P/P when the pedal is released.
