Default Transmission Main Shaft

I am replacing a badly worn transmission main shaft with the currently available Mark brand of shaft and having trouble fitting my moderately worn Ford sliding gears. I am wondering if I just need to chamfer the spline edges on the new shaft, or? What is the secret to getting the gears on and sliding? Thanks!

Hi Barry,
I remember the same thing using used gears with a new shaft, I smoothed the sharp edges on the shafts with some fine crocus cloth, something you would not be expected to do, worked just fine, no slipping out of 2nd on long grades.

Although expense replacing all the gears with new Mark Auto gears works well

I also had the same problem. I tried all 3 available brands at that time with the same results. I ended up sanding .005 off the new shaft and the used original Ford sliders worked very well.

Wouldn't it be nice if Vendors had gears to check on their new shafts before they ship? And, include a document saying they were tested and approved. Wonder how much more they would charge you..

But, don't you think good Vendors should do that as part of the final quality control process?

That all part of rebuilding, measuring, fitting, testing, etc. They may make the shafts a little oversized to fit wornngears.
