Default Nuts Q...

I always seen / read how Ford made his many parts with consistency. Not hard to believe considering the millions of cars (Model As) that he made.

I was just checking in pile of stuff. Looked at three crank nuts and wondered why the differences. Anyone have ideas about why these 3 are not exact copies of each other

Side note: I worked on Hillmans that had a cast on POT METAL head & was always LOOSENING!---I used a Chrysler bolt, with a heavy flat washer & a Star washer & they never loosened again.

Are you sure they are all Ford made parts? There were many aftermarket parts makers over the years (jep (sp) parts Ford called them). I suspect one or more of the parts in your picture might be repros. I have seen the same thing with crank bolts - differences and always chalked it up to repro parts. I even had one that wouldn't thread into the crank threads - I don't think Ford would make any parts like that.

One of these may be for the Ford V8 - which had the nut. In one of my books the author/rebuilder advises that the V8 version is "superior material" and is to be preferred in the Model A application.

Dunno, could be hearsay.

Otherwise I would have to put it to subcontractor variation. Ford used MANY subcontractors - sometimes the pieces would be marked for traceability, other times not.

One of the vendors for the V8 nut repop advertises "1-1/8 hex" like there may be others out there?

1941 was the last usable crank nut that I can remember. The '42 on didn't have a hole in the grill for the crank handle.

Years ago, while attending high school, I saw one guy everyday going to work with a half-dead battery who cranked his Model B Ford everyday on the ferry boat.

Per Bill's question no. 5 ..... was that particular question aimed at Ford Nuts inside the car, or Ford Nuts inside the engine compartment?

I wonder if the Ford cars and trucks ended the hand crank nut at the same time?

My 1949 Chevy 1 1/2 ton truck with a 216 engine still has a hand crank.
My 1950 Studebaker car still has the hand crank bolt, but no hole through the grill.

I understand that. A dog is more than a pet - they're a companion.

You may be right. Ford made a big change in the '49 Model year. I believe '48 was the last year for the 59AB engine. That's what my '48 had, although I can't remember if it had a crank.

My 1948 F2 has the hole and nut for cranking, great for setting timing and adjusting valves. I know the 6 still had it and think the V8 may have also. This may be just a truck thing.

I had a'41 Convertible, quite sure it was the last "crank" car. It took 3 YARDS of cold roll, to build my own CRANK!!!
