In trying to install a new flywheel pilot bearing, I am unable to get it all the way in. There is about .040 protruding--not flush. Does anyone see that as a potential problem or do I need to try to remove it and start over. How far in does it actually need to go?? Does it need to go all the way to the back way beyond flush?? Thanks for your suggestions.

I believe it needs to be flush with the flywheel. Could be in crooked, (spelling?)
Remove, check for burrs reinstall.

I put an engine in last winter, I put a new pilot bearing in the flywheel before installing the flywheel. Once the flywheel was tightened down, the pilot was pushed back out slightly. It all went together ok.

I put one in about two years ago.....you can see it's not quite flush with the flywheel..it worked fine...

Like the two above, the pilot bearing wants to sit flush against the flange on the end of the crank shaft. If you install a pilot bearing in a flywheel while it is laying on a work bench and you tap it in flush to the flywheel it will be pushed out slightly when you mount the flywheel onto the crank.
