Was it turning the engine or just making noise?

Put the car in third gear and rock it back and forth. If you hear it pop loose it may be a bad spot on the ring gear. Just a thought??? Chap

Could be the bendix spring has broken, or the bolt holding it has broken. Not a hard job to remove the starter to inspect the situation.
