Default Installing new intake and exhaust manifolds

After building a new touring engine I found my exhaust manifold was cracked and warped, same with the intake. Purchased new manifolds from Snyder's plus all the hardware needed.

Question; do these need to be surfaced or is it just a bolt on out of the box?

you can bolt them up and see how they line up. I have the equipment for surfacing so I surface them no matter what. Put a straight edge on them and if they are out more than .0025 I surface them.
I recommend leaving the two 5/16" manifold bolts loose and snugging it up to the block starting with the inward nuts and then working the two outboard nuts... snug in a couple of increments ( with manifold washers installed of course) until snug and then tightening the intake to exhaust bolts... then remove as an assembly and check the plane of the manifolds. This is for a new I & E.. together. IF you are mating old to new I still do the same but don't snug too much until I know how far out it is otherwise you risk breaking an ear off.

It is good practice to face the washer/bolt surfaces with an "end Mill" as well as surfacing the block contact surface.

Just one (1) method & past Manifold Experience:

A. First good idea is to try to buy both intake & exhaust manufactured by the same manufacturer to achieve a more perfect fit.
.
B. Second good idea is inquire from a Model A Parts owner, (and/or an informed technical staff member with integrity), who can respond whether or not "their" new manifold block surfaces are a matched set which can be installed without requiring resurfacing.

C. Just happened to ask questions A. & B. above and ordered mine from Bratton's about (10) years ago ...... intake & exhaust were perfect ....... however, if requested, surely others parts places may be able to provide "positive" answers to questions A. & B.
