Default sealed beam adapters

31 pickup... when i started this money pit all i had was the headlight buckets, rims and pieces of the sealed beam adapters. i ordered new adapters and ran into the shallow bucket situation right off. i cured that by soldering pig tails on the bulb terminals ( i couldn't find 5/16 female spades listed anywhere) after doing some research on this sight i find that these adapters are not too popular because you are supposed to run the original lens in front of the bulbs
which kills a lot of light. has any one used a flat clear lens (glass, safety glass, plexiglass) instead of the old style lens? that would take up the space between the rim and the adapters without killing so much light. comments?
