Engine Knocking
Hello everyone!
I finally got my truck starting as I wanted. Thanks to the help of one of the forum local users (he did all the work). Anyway, I went for a ride and now I hear this Knocking sound when I accelerate. Video below so you can hear it too https://goo.gl/photos/McMEfGZfD5DKWj1E6 Please help, I'm not sure what that could be or how bad is it. Thanks! |

Re: Engine Knocking
Mechanic's stethoscope from Amazon.com might be a good start to try to pinpoint the source of this sound.
Joy riding with a knock is never a good idea. |

Re: Engine Knocking
Find it before it kills your project. I wouldn't start it again until the pan was dropped to check the bearings and rod bushings.

Re: Engine Knocking
I listened to it, and that sounds bad! No more joy riding until you find out why.

Re: Engine Knocking
Sad to say that it certainly sounds like you have a big end bearing that has failed. Pull the pan and check. I suspect you will find there will be lots of broken babbitt in dipper wells. As Franklin and big hammer said, don't drive it until you find the problem. You might consider just running it at idle and short out one spark plug at a time. If indeed you have a failed babbitt on one rod the knock will almost disappear when the bad rod is shorted out.

Re: Engine Knocking
Center main or a rod. Looks like it is time for some engine work.

Re: Engine Knocking
Shorting out # 2 & # 3, at the same time, will SILENCE a center main knock!

Re: Engine Knocking
I couldn't get anything to load to hear the sound, but I sure know what the center main with no babbit sounds like because that was the case when I bought my 29 Tudor. It sounded so nice at the swap meet when I heard the engine idle, but when I got it home and drove it over about 15 MPH it sounds like a broken down threshing machine.
Time to pull the engine and rebuild it. It's also the perfect time to add a counterweighted crankshaft to greatly prolong the life of the babbit. |

Re: Engine Knocking
Tom, same happened to me. Failed to open on the first try. Went back in latter and had a second go and it opened.
