Am repainting my '36 LB block and want to know if the area between the top of the head and intake manifold gets paint, currently it doesn't. Also, I have the letters LB stamped in top left front of the block, would that have been from the factory or one of the machine shops that rebuilt it in its distant past?

It's most likely from the factory in Detroit.
It stands for Loose Bearing. It's the first V8 design with insert bearings. All V8's prior to the LB blocks were poured babbit mains. |

No paint on that surface.
LB is Large Bearing. Factory, unless an unscrupulous seller.

I knew the engine had replaceable main bearings as I replaced them the first time I rebuilt it nearly 20 years ago. I just wanted to know if the factory did stamp them. Thanks for the info..

Some they stamped but not all.
I've never read or heard of a reason why they didn't stamp them all. |

LB loose bearings, large bearings , I read a long time ago to a reference of liner bearings, doesn't really matter, except you got lucky for a 36 block!!
