Default squeak somewhere in Cabriolet steering column

I have suddenly gained an annoying squeak when turning the steering wheel (when moving) in my 34 Ford. Q. Do I have to remove and dissemble the column to get lube into the right location or is there a likely easier solution going from top down, leaving the column in place? 2nd Q: Does anyone yet reproduce a stock wiper motor for an open car of same year? Thx!

is it coming from the upper column bearing?, actually a rubber bushing and very prone to squeak. squirt a little oil under the steering wheel art the column bell and see if that stops the squeek

Yes, I believe the squeak is near the top. Will try the recommendation. Didn't know if I could effectively hit the problem area, but no downside, I guess.

I have a squeak there. Mine is caused by the steering wheel rubbing against the column.
You may take a look there.

No one reproduces a wiper motor closed or open car. Kent Jaquith at Clean Sweep wiper service in Oregon may be able to get the motor you need he can re-chromes the motor and is the only service, I know of, to do this, due to the masking needed.
You may want to use a rubber friendly lube on the upper steering column bushing, not oil. If there is play in this area there is a replacement roller bearing to take the place of the rubber bushing. Not a bad job especially for an open car.

if you find that to be the case--remove steering wheel and pull out the old bushing by threading sheet metal screws into the rubber--usually 4 pull up on the screws a little at a time, when you get the mess out--go to the hardware store and buy a wheel bearing for a wheel barrow wheel--3/4" id--od will be correct--you may need to slightly grind the od of the bearing "collar" to gain the clearance--slide down the shaft-use some construction adh to hold the od tight to the steering tube-now you have a sqeeek proof upper shaft bearing for lees than $5

Ron replace the rubber steering bushing with a modern bearing and it makes a difference in a little easier steering and you can buy the bearing kit from Dan Brusegard in MN. Tel.# 763-533-9879 or [email protected] and check out this previous post.
