Has anyone ever changed spring shackles on the rear springs without removing the spring.?? We've done it several times removing the spring or the rear end, but never with it in the car. What procedure is used??
Thanks!!

Have to have a spring spreader - in or out of the car, any other way MAY be fatal.

I just did it with my '31 CCPU-I have a good spring spreader, but the main problem is getting the worn out shackle bushings out of the spring and spring mounts. I got a tool to drive them out from one of the parts vendors, but it was just unhardened steel, and quickly mushroomed over in use-those old bushings were neglected, and well-rusted in place. I ended up putting a hacksaw blade through them, reconnecting it to the saw frame, and cutting through the bushing. I eventually got them all out, but I probably should have just removed the whole spring. I guess another problem with doing it with the spring in the car is jack placement-I had two jackstands supporting the rear frame, and two supporting the rear axle. I removed and replaced the shackles on one side at a time.

Yes it can be done in the car, as was said use a good safe spring spreader ( screw jacks on each end) and spread till shackles are unloaded . Remove and replace bushings if needed and shackles services/replaced if needed. You can use a socket with a very large c clamp to try and press out old spring bushings and then replacing then about the same method . They should usually go in fairly easy. I have a luxury of a v8 kr Wilson shackle took set which makes it a breeze ... Use your own enginuity but be safe . Make sure shackle fits bushings prior to attempting reinsertion if shackles Be safe !! Larry Shepard |
