Default Quick question

I'm asking a dumb question to avoid a dumb mistake. I pulled my starter to remove my steering column. When I put it back on, should the starter gear be out towards the end of the shaft or back on the motor side? I tried searching but I want to hear from someone who knows for sure. Thanks!

Joel

End of the shaft - it engages from the rear.

Quick answer no dumb questions, Bendix moves back towards the starter motor and engages the flywheel

That's what it looked like to me, but I wanted to avoid expensive noises the first time I hit the button. Thanks!

If the drive is in the forward position, I'm not sure it will install past the flywheel.
At least it will fit into place much easier in the retracted position at the far end of the shaft.

The starter will NOT install with the drive forward. It has to be rotated to the rear.
