Default 35 Pinion & Drive Shaft Spline Pin

I'm ready to assemble the remainder of my 35 rear end and have a new pin
to secure the pinion and drive shaft splines together. Unlike the original pin,
which I removed months ago with its peened over end, the new pin has an
approximate 1/4" deep hole drilled into it. What's the intended way to blunt
this to prevent it from backing out?

support the underside, with the support pushing against the head of the pin. The support needs to absorb the hammer blows necessary without placing stress on the pinion bearings. Place a large center punch into the hole and get the pin end to expand out so it can not move anymore. If necessary replace the center punch with a pin punch. It is soft steel that deforms nicely.

Thanks for the info Terry. So the walls of the pin just need to flare out slightly.
That's what I suspected.

Yup just peen it over but be careful not to hit it too many times as then the metal becomes thinner and you can guess what happens over time with that.

It's important to use a pin that's made of soft steel and peen the ends like the guy's are saying. The first time I did this I used some 1/4" rod material that was not soft enough. After a few thousand miles the peening failed and the pin came out far enough to rub on the inner wall of the torque tube. It was making a noise that changed in pitch based on the speed I was traveling. Only problem was I couldn't hear that noise because I'm running with a straight exhaust pipe and most of my hearing has been gone for over five years. It took a passenger with good hearing and several other people driving their cars behind or along side mine to hear this noise and let me know I had something wrong in the rear of my car. Had to completely remove the rear and replace that pin again, and this time doing it correctly. It's like the old saying....do it right the first time or do it again, and maybe even again and again, until you get right .
