Default Using Mitch's suggestion, I made one..

In an earlier post, I stated I was having trouble removing the center tube from my hood. Mitch showed me a set of driver rods, so here's what I made.

Using one of the original 1/4" solid side rods (which are actually 0.256, not 0.250,) I turned down one end to 7/32" diameter by 1/2" long on my metal lathe.

Using a short piece of brass rod, I drilled a 7/32" hole in it. Cut it off to 1/2" long and pressed the brass onto the end of the rod.

Chucked up the rod with the brass end about 2" away from the chuck jaws and turned the outside of the brass sleeve to 0.375.

Inserted the home made "Mitch Driver" into the hollow tube (nice snug fit)
and tapped the tube out pretty easily. By using the center rod full length, I could tap it out all the way without pulling or spinning.

Yes, you do need a metal lathe with a 3 jaw chuck.

Thank you, Sir!

Larry

As stated, used one's are pretty reasonable.

Get at least a 4" swing one. Mine was used for $200. And it has power feed longitudinally both ways. So many Model A parts can be reworked. I polish anything round. Makes 'em look purdy..

Hey Larry, you do know that everything Mitch knows about Model A Fords, he learned from reading Grit. I can set you up with a subscription and give it to ya for half the price I sell to Mitch..........for sure.

I'm too young to read Grit.
