Gas tank cleaning?

Went to the radiator shop that cleans radiators and gas tanks, was told by the owner he will use acid to clean the tank then seal it, all for $175. Then I asked him to braze the steering column hook up on the gas tank for extra support so no leaks in the future. Should I do it????

Does this radiator shop know how to clean AND have experience with Model A gastanks?

If not contact local Model A club and find where they have had them fixed.

Many times radiator shops use a solution (like acid) that removes the brass threads where the cap screws on destroying the tank.

Steering bracket should be re-soldered and the tank stripped and checked for cracks for several inches around the bracket mounting.

Should check above, below and each side within 2 two inches of bracket for cracks.

Some tanks leak around bracket AND have cracks also.

After installing tank it is a good idea to install one of the late 1931 brackets that mount to the rail above the tank. Then remove the rubber on the original bracket to relieve strain on the lower bracket.

Do not remove old bracket ... I leave the lower bracket intact in case someone in the future wants to use the original bracket for a "finepoint" restoration.

Makes tank more valuable.

Snyders should fix the description on the bill Hirsch sealer they sell if ethanol eats it. I guess the key word is RESISTS

If that's the case, I think I will just fill the tank with vinegar and that's it. I took the tank off, its not as bad as I thought, little rust and 1 rubber gasket and 1 Half off a cork gasket in tank.

I had my Ford 8N tractor tank dipped and soldered up at the local radiator shop. For about two years afterwards, what ever part of the insides of the gas tank was exposed to the air, it corroded up real fast with beads of rust. When in storage, I had to keep a full tank. I eventually I put some diesel in with my fuel to stop the rust problem. It was a strange experience.

What about the Bill Hirsch sealer?

I personally would not use it! Keep tank full and i always put in 4ozs Marvel Mystery Oil per tank. The Great Pacific Northwest moist damp air no problems. Plus drive as much as possible!Merry Christmas!!

I'll never coat a tank, but will clean them out as best I can, and use good filters.

I use the stand up filter in the shutoff valve, the firewall cast iron filter, and the brass screen in the carb inlet. No extra inline filter, but if I had a dirty tank I'd probably install the "dirty leg" setup until the junk stopped coming out.
