Default multi plate clutch starter

Does the flywheel with the multi plate clutch use a different starter motor,
I have a couple of engines with the multi plate clutch and see the starter is different to my 28 with a single plate clutch.
The starter for the multi plate flywheel has a different size shaft and bendix.
can I use the later starter motor on the multiple flywheel?
Thanks Lawrie

You can't use the stock later starter with the multiplate flywheel. You will need to use the Abell Drive or the Service Drive, both of which fit the 1/2" shaft.

This is pictured and talked about in the SERVICE BULLETINS.

Also do a search here for "STARTER DRIVES", or "MULTIPLATE FLYWHEEL", etc.

I looked this up here and there are tons of threads on this, you can not use the later starter with the 5/8 shaft with the early mulitplate flywheel, there isn't clearance enough for the 5/8 shaft/bendix to clear and the bolts will catch and make havoc with the flywheel. here are some links to the previous posts.

Thanks Guys, I was going to sell the early starters ,but will now keep them to go with the engines that have the multi plate flywheel.

OOOOOPS !!! A while back I changed out a starter on a multi disc clutch car . The vehicle had been flooded and the original starter motor was full of water . Whilst I dried it out etc etc I replaced it .I without thinking I grabbed one out of the "stores" and put it in and it worked just fine ,out of about 10 starter motors I chose one with the 1/2" shaft . The starter motor fairy smiled on me !!! . I checked the ones I have and only one other 1/2" motor . I see the Bendix "gear" is 1/4" dia narrower than the 5/8" shaft so a regular could not engage the ring gear but I bet nasty expensive noises would have followed . "Familiarity breeds contempt" as we say ,I will be more carefull next time !!!

John,
Must have been more than just SHOWERS, to flood the starter
After 5 years drought, it's finally RAINING HERE! GLAD MY CARRIAGE HOUSE IS UP HIGH!
Your comments reminded me, Friend, Ron, put a rebuilt BOSCH starter on a VW-Bug, wouldn't start, it was a look-alike starter for some other application & it turned in the REVERSE DIRECTION
