Default e-brake shaft help

I hate to ask for help on something that should be so simple to do.
Anyway, I took apart my e-brake shaft many months ago and I kind of forget exactly how the felt and brass cups fit together. I'm re-using all original parts except the felts, which look too big to fit the cups.
Do I force the felts over the rounded end and slide them all the way in against the shoulder? Or do they just go against the end of the rounded end of the shaft and the brass cup forced over it, keeping the felt "around" the ball?
Do you normally have to trim the felts?
It would probably be best to smear them with grease first before installation, correct?
Need some guidance please
