Clyde, the V-8 Ford Club of America sells a great book that covers 1942 thru 1948 Fords in great detail. I would recommend purchasing it.

1946 ford serial numbers:

Starting number: 99a 650,280

My 46 number 99a 1,293,xxx

Ending number 99a 1,412,709

So, I assume my 46 is late.

The EFV8 book - 1941-1948 book states that 46 production continued until mid-February 1947 when the cars were deemed 1947. Hence early 47's carried a lot of 46 trim. It also states that 467,000 46's were built. I got the serial numbers from Van Pelt information which include Mercury numbers since they shared the 99a prefix.
What is your serial number?
John

Here's a photo of a early 46 Ford trunk. Notice the wooden covers for the tool tray.
