I have been looking at a green bible. The listing for a 32 axle shaft is about 5/8 shorter than the later axles. I wonder what the real flange to flange width is. The 32 uses a 24 tooth gear so that would maybe throw the width off. Does it change with the use of 40 brakes? I would also like to know the flange to flange width of a stock 40 rear. I had been under the impression that 33-34 rears were narrow like a 32 but the bible says no. I also found that the early 32 rear used A axle shafts.

Andy........The old Street Rodder article in the link below may help ya figure-out the width you're looking for on the '40 rear. If it helps any at all, a '34 banjo housing is 5/16" narrower than a '35-'48 banjo housing. DD

I've never checked the big green book for the 32 stuff specifically. The A style rear axle for the Model B bangers is pretty much like the model A axles. The Model 18 V8 axle was the first departure from that but I always figured the model 18 V8 axle was the same between the 32 thru 34 cars. As long as they are all model 18. The 200 cid 4 cylinder stuck around for a while but I don't know which axle was used for 4 bangers in 1933 or 34 unless they continued on with the model 18 axle for both the V8 and the 4 banger. The green book sort of indicates that with the differential housing but they don't list the complete axle assemblies in there. I wished that they would have.

Minor but useful difference between B complete rear and A is that the brake flanges are a tiny bit closer together, eliminating an annoying drum/plate interference seen on A's when hydraulic brakes are added. 18 axle, used on late '32 and all '33-4, is 32.18", an amount you, like Ford, can ignore. The four cylinder '33-'s got a shorter driveshaft, only dif from V8 rear, because they had to squeeze everything in sight to get the longer B into a shortened engine compartment. '40 used 81A axle at 32.85. Nearly a universal choice for rodders swapping A and B axles out. Last edited by Bruce Lancaster; 10-21-2015 at 12:01 PM. |
