Default muffler question

Does anyone have any experience using a modern muffler in place of the tapered muffler? My 31 coupe has a hole in the muffler and sounds bad. Just wondering if a modern flow through muffler will work with a stock engine. Harv.

It will work but won't have the same sound.
I bought the Aries stainless muffler, so it should never rust out.

To save money, I installed a $25 modern muffler in my grandson's 1929 Tudor. His modern muffler lasted only about two weeks. While he was driving it, the motor let out a backfire and he blew the modern muffler wide open. He likes the louder sound of the A motor so he installed a straight pipe in the place of the blown modern muffler, and that was about 5 years ago. My guess is that the A muffler will handle a backfire better than a modern muffler will.

I have a "modern" muffler...it was installed in the 60's or maybe earlier. It's abut 26" long and 6" diameter..... It still has a distinctive sound but it's not like other Model A's I've heard...

I used Aries as well and have been really happy with it. Here is my installation.

FWIW, the Aries are supposed to be an exact duplicate of the original and does not have too much back pressure. I have an earlier replica on my sedan, which had an inadequate flange where it connects to the manifold. The car sounds more like a tractor than a Model A. I bought a used muffler that I think is an Aries to replace it. When I get around to it.

Someone pulled up in front of my house with what looked and sounded like a stock model A. It definitely had the right sound. Under the hood was a 4 cylinder Chevy II which connected to a stock Model A muffler. If you want the Model A sound get an Aires muffler, if you want something else go to Midas.

The steel Aries muffler sounds better than the stainless Aries muffler. I have used them both, and the stainless one sounds to tinny for my taste.

Thanks all for the quick responses, I am making the coupe up as a daily driver so am not concerned about the original A sound but just a quiet muffler. Thanks again to all. Harv.

For quiet you will want a regular muffler with baffles, and not a straight through muffler. Someone installed a turbo muffler on my 1950 Studebaker and I don't like the extra noise it makes, so I'll replace it with a stock muffler.

Well heck it you are gonna change it out move the modern muffler toward the rear. Having a muffler as close to the exhaust manifold as Ford designed it requires a tough muffler.

Even with a daily driver it would be nice to hear that "Model A" sound.
