Default 1935 flathead out and piston twist

Hi

Just want to be sure...
Can I pull the engine without the transmission or is that not the correct way to do it...?
Does seam to be easier but very hard to reach the bolts on the transmission.
Havnt tried this before - is there a good dummy book/guide for this?.

Next the heads are off and I can see both num 2 and 6 piston has a very slight twist on the up/down.
What can cause this?

Need to pull the engine to sort out pin damage in cylinder 5 and 6.
