Go to an electric motor shop and get a strip of insulated paper,
put it between shaft and rotor to tighten it. G.M.

Sounds like the spring steel clip is missing. Goes between the distributor shaft and the rotor

I need to check I think im missing that spring clip. I don't remeber puting one in when i change to new rotor 2 months ago , its a 34 Flatty Thanks BM

Isn't the spring clip only for 49-53 distributors?

49-53 was what I figured the OP was working on but I think the 2 bolt 42-48 also has the clip.

If its a early 3 bolt distributor I don't know.

I guess it would be easier if there was a picture of the distributor

The 34 style distributor does not use the clip. Are you using an old rotor or a new? If old change it and see if the new one is still loose. If the new rotor is still loose then change the distributor shaft to one that fits better. It should be a snug fit with no rotation of the rotor on the shaft. If you don't have the parts send the entire distributor with caps and condenser to Bubba for a rebuild and timing.

its not the rotor that has play its the shaft , with shorter rotors it won't be snug , maybe a copper washer will do the trick?
