OK I've purchased a restored govebox radio. I need some help with installaton and wiring. I have the Service Bulletin but am still confused
First of all I've enclosed photos of the plug and the back of the radio . The plug has only one wire which is for the 6V power supply. Is the orientation of the plug when plugged in important ? -as there appears to be nothing to ensure that it is orientated on plug in. Secondly what forms the earth from the radio and Thirdly how does the radio mount in place ie what holds it in the glovebox Thanks Karl |

Don't take this as Gospel, as I am not familiar with 34 radios, but it appears from your photos that two of the four pins are larger dia, also the plug appears to have two different sized sockets. This means plug will only go on one way: when all pins/sockets are oriented correctly.
I'd guess that the attaching of radio into dash would provide an earth, as with any old Ford , you can never provide enough earths, you can always run a seperate earth wire from radio frame to a dedicated ground. I understand you remove glovebox and lid, and this unit fills the hole left in dashboard.

Thanks Brian you are right -There are different sized holes -sometimes we look and just don't see the obvious ! The unit is so heavy I don't think it can be supported just by the dash there must me some support somewhere else -I know the ashtray radios bolt to the firewall I'm not sure about the glovebox ones . Hi Karl, Your rear plug is correct in having only one cable which has an in line metal fuse holder for the glass fuse ford part number B-14526 which is a 20 amp fuse. I would suggest using a 15 amp fuse here. The radio draws around 6 amps and a little more when first turned on. As stated before the plug only goes in one way. The supply cable goes to battery negative ( your car should be pos ground ). Connect the supply cable to the battery side of the under dash fuse holder. The radio will earth via its mountings to the dash. The 1934 service bulletins do not show the rear of radio mounting brackets for the glovebox set. They only show mounting details for the centre control (ashtray) radio. The rear of the radio should have a "U" shaped flat angled metal bracket riveted to the lower centre rear radio panel. Another special "S" shaped bracket bolts to this and then bolts up through the firewall insulator and on to the horizontal surface of the firewall or dash as the yanks call it. These special brackets are very hard to find and usually quite pricey. They were reproduced a few years ago but not now. Your closed car should have an antenna cable routed down the front left side pillar (R H drive car ) which is connected to the chicken wire antenna in the roof. PM me if you like for more info. Regards, Kevin.
