Default Choke and throttle rod removal

I am getting the engine ready to lift out of the 37 Ford. Can the choke and throttle rods be removed for clearance? I don't want to destroy the original knobs.

I removed them from my '36 about 20 years ago. If I remember correctly, they are two pieces soldered together. Just heat the joint up and slide them apart (if a '37 is like a '36).

The rods are in 2 parts connected by a collar. You need to pop out the rubber grommet in the dash to push them (rods) back into the car.The pic posted are 36's and similar to 37's.

Upon further investigation I found what looks like the remains of the original dash grommets pushed in behind the dash on the rods. They catch on the sleeve (collar) that connects the rod together and that is why they won't pull through. A previous attempt to repair one of the grommets has been forced into the dash, doesn't look like the right kind. Are the collars that connect the rods together crimped or soldered?

I believe crimped. The collars act as a stop up against the grommet.New correct grommets are available at most vendors in brown, black and gray.

Mark-

What I have done to my '35 and '36 was to cut the rods, thread them and use a turnbuckle to reattach the two pieces. The nice thing I like about this approach is it allows for perfect alignment of the of the print on the knob and easy removal if needed.

Thanks deuce lover, I found the rods, grommets, and knobs on a couple of vendor sites.

Tom, that looks like a very simple solution instead of dealing with crimping and trying to keep the knobs in the right position. Thanks.

The bigger chore now is dealing with the Ford Heater exchanger. I have the Ford accessory type with the unique exhaust manifold, heat exchanger, etc. that uses the radiator fan to move heat through it into the car. Removing the nuts that hold the exchanger to the exhaust manifold will take some determination and patience along with lots of penetrating oil.

Mark,If somehow you can heat those nuts red hot they should come loose.Your orig knobs didn't look to bad.I would try to save them and just replace the grommet. The repo grommets have a split in them so easy to replace.Sheldon

Sheldon, I was wondering about the grommets being split or not and thinking if not I could split them myself. I am limited to the basic hardware store propane torches so cherry red probably won't happen. Trying the candle wax treatment too. I have had limited success with that. Gave both nuts a good whack on the sides to set up a vibration for the penetrating oil. Today I will offer up a ritual to the spirits of rusted and frozen bolts invoking numerous chants and gibberish to release the nuts. Onward.

Candle wax, a propane torch and the ritual worked. Got 'em.
