I have some extra brake shoes with molding linings on them and thought I might try my hand at replacing them with woven linings.
Doesn’t appear too difficult but I am wondering if there are any tips from Barners that have been down this road before are willing pass along. I ordered the linings and a Brake Rivet Tool from Bratton’s and now I am waiting on Mr. Brown (UPS). I also have a 12 TON press if needed. Thanks

Hold the lining firmly down on the shoe with some sort of clamp. Start riveting in the middle and work toward the ends of the lining.

What I have been doing is installing and just start setting "ALL" the rivets then starting from the center work out using clamps for the final setting. Found that the holes in the shoes are just big enough that I would end up being a smige to one side and would have to re-drill a couple of holes to install the end rivets on one end. I have a brake lining machine which help to be able to just break the top over on the rivets.

Must the woven linings be riveted or could they be bonded like they do with modern ones? Regards Chris |

I thought someone on Forbarn had mentioned bonded woven linings about a year ago, but I'd only rivet them. Riveting is easy to do and if you put a small drop of oil on the tool, it gives a much nicer rolled edge to the rivet.

I had a set of woven linings bonded on for a roadster pickup I restored, and they worked well, and it was not only a lot less work, now the linings can be used past where the rivets would touch the drum.

RE bonded linings;
A: I don't see the point people have been riveting the linings on for over 100 years and has worked just fine and B: price out the cost of having bonded linings removed, the last time I checked it was around $17 PER shoe. At the shop we will no longer take bonded shoes as cores for brake jobs because of the cost to remove the linings. |

Tom's drop of oil trick resulted in my rivets rounding over real nice with no cracks. I used 3 in 1 oil.
