A scavenger Hunt. Part of which could have a point A to Point B timed race.
( Maybe 5 - 10 mile course ) The course is laid out using the exact speed limits / Contestants loose points for being to early ( AKA - SPEEDING ) or they loose points for being to slow ( AKA - POKY MAN ) Use this as the first part of the hunt / Then give clues of what they will see at the next location / don't have to bring anything back just write down what it is they see. And so on . Have to send the cars out about 5 min apart so that there is no Cheating >>> |

Run over fluffy toy/rubber duck with passenger side front wheel.
This ones impossible but hilarious watching 'em try..... suspend apple on string from tree, just above windshield height (only works with open cars) driver has to go as slow as poss and take bite out of apple. Tug of war on grass is good. Ruins grass and bumpers, so only for old bangers! Parking competition with cones, ie reverse into narrow "garage". Mark out a straight course with a pair of cones half way. From start line to cones has to be as slow as possible, from cones to finish line as fast as possible. For the first part, someone has to walk alongside to spot no-one touches brake or clutch. Needs 2 stopwatches. |

Not to park a rainstorm over the parade but...
Think real carefully about safety, liability, and traffic law issues. What ever you do keep it safe. Think about what might go wrong and design things so no spectators or j.q. public will get into contact with a moving vehicle. Next is the safety of the participants, and also avoidance of denting the vehicles. What could happen if a throttle sticks, or brakes fail, or the nut behind the wheel got loosened with alcohol? Any event where speed of the vehicle becomes significant for "victory" could be construed as "racing". This could run afowl of various laws for both the driver and the organizers of the event. Most car insurance specifically excludes racing. If your event is on the streets make sure there is no advantage to violating a traffic rule, and violating a traffic rule is an automatic disqualification. Check with the venue for the picnic. If what you do goes against their policies or they feel it causes an unusual liability exposure you could find youselves suddenly unwelcome. Think it through, do it right, and have fun. One idea for a basic skills course is to check with your local fire department to see what they use for fire engine drivers... We had a course that included backing, parallel parking, tight curves, diminishing clearances and an ample time limit to finish that did not contribute to the score, just kept people moving at a reasonable speed. |
