Default 52 Mercury Shocks

I see front and rear shock absorbers are available for my 52 Merc. Just wondering how big a job it is to install the front shocks as they are inside the coil springs. Do they just come out the bottom of the spring with a little un-bolting or do I have to remove the coil spring?

the hole in the bottom of the a frame is large enough to let the shock come out once the lower bolts are removed

Your biggest concern is that you don't snap off the bolts that hold in the lower plate.

Good point. I guess it is time to start soaking them with penetrating oil. I've already got a carburetor and a water pump with twisted off bolts to deal with so I don't need any more.

I've had to relpace those bolts that hold the round plates on one of my 51 Mercs due to them snapping off. I used carriage bolts that were Ford spec for pickup runniing boards or something like that then I just brazed them on. Not a fun project.

I tried one today. Hardest part was getting at the head of the bolts to hold them while loosening the nut. Had to jack up the car so the spring hung down giving enough room to get a wrench in between the coils. Just a fine thread five sixteenths bolt. The top end of the shock could be even harder to loosen .
