Default 42 - 48 rear brakes

Here's my problem. I have 42 to 48 rear brakes on my Model A. Since I had over a 100 books on old Fords and cars of all breeds, I donated the lot to the Auto Museum at Black Hawk. Along with that donation went all my knowledge of the brake system on my car. Now I'm wondering the proper direction to turn the adjusters to take up some alack? I have found that if I rotate them far enough in either direction I can lock them up. I'd rather not pull the hubs as the lining are only a year or two old, not a whole lot of miles and the less I pull hubs the happier the axle threads seem to be. Thanks for any tips.
