30 Coupe Interior

On the lock pillar there are a couple of pieces of wood in the latch area that seem to extend further out than does the rest of the door pillar wood.
Is there a reason for this? I am tempted to sand it back to align with the rest of the door jamb but dont want to mess up something important.
Any thoughts?
