Default Grease pump rebuild

I have cleaned up and disassembled the plunger. When I separated the tangs on the plunger the gasket or whatever was sandwiched fell apart. It appeared to be paper. What should it be? Rubber? Leather? I was thinking of cutting a circular piece of gasket material. Has anyone done this before? Your help is appreciated.

I haven't looked at mine in years, but I thought it was a cork plunger.

I now have three of them and one was like a paper gasket, one has a 1/2" cork, and one has what appears to be a piece of leather with the tangs like in the picture above.
