I bought and installed a new choke rod with dash grommet and it worked well. When I tried to pull it a few weeks later ir would not budge. Upon dis-assembly, I find that the rubber from the new grommet had migrated to the rod, to the extent that it had to be sanded off. I never heard of a metal to rubber reaction but I guess it is possible.
What should I do? A few ideas are brake fluid, wd-40, or - - ? Thanks |

Might be wrong but I think the grommet is supposed to be leather instead of rubber. Maybe the proximity to gasoline is the reason it failed. Others will chime in I'm sure.

Choke Rod grommet is supposed to be rubber. Tomorrow I will pull the print and give you the exact ID measurement. We reshape the grommets and bore the hole to the proper size on each one so they look/perform as they're supposed to.

It's a long shot but make sure the choke rod is not a a path to ground (b+).
It use to show up on 60's cars. The early K cars would knock out wheel bearings until they put a ground wire on the strut tower. In other words is the choke rod getting warm. Odd the rubber would deteriorate in a few weeks. I doubt it given the way Ford hard mounted everything but you never know.

I concur with Brent as I have found the new choke rod grommets are too tight, so I bore/adjust the inside diameter to get it to where it needs to be. As Tom said a little Vaseline doesn't hurt either but it will probably be a temporary solution till the Vaseline goes away and/or the rubber swells from it.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, in the ford manual it says to pull out on the gav and when the car starts, let go of it. Is the gav supposed to spring shut or do you push it closed? My car, you have to push it closed.

The choke rod should return without having to be pushed in.
