WOW!!!!!! I just took my 68-C for a test run after installing a Snyders 5.5 head. I can't believe the difference!!!!! After I spoke to James Rogers at dreamworks for his input I called Bert's and ordered the head, head gasket and new studs. It took a few hours to get it done but I am blown away at the difference!!!!! Thanks James and Bert's!!! VERY HAPPY!!!!!!

If you have not already, make sure you know where the spark lever should be with the higher compression head. Some guys just start the car and yank the lever all the way forward. Maybe it works for them, but not me. One of my Model A's has the 5.5 head and it runs best about a little less than 2/3 advance. My other Model A has a 6.0 head and about half way advanced on the lever and it runs like a champ. Stock distributor and timing setup, stock zenith carb. YMMV of course......

So you are saying that if I take my stock engine..... change the cam to IB330, toss in a burlinton crank, bore 40 over, go with larger intake valves, put the 6.0 compression head on it and lighten the flywheel...... but use the stock intake, exhaust and distributor I should expect to see an improvement?

James you were so right! As for the advance about 2/3 the way down seems to be the sweet spot!

I have found even on my own 68C, the lever needs to be about 3 cliks from the bottom. Glad I could help and you are happy.

I have a couple of engines with BF heads. On one,my worn out engine,I can run the advance at about half,at the most.On another, that I built a few years ago I can only run 1/4 down on the lever at the most. That engine is .080 over,B cam,B dist.cam, otherwise stock. It has 80 pounds compression across all four.

for those that run HC heads and find they need to be near the bottom of the quadtrant to get good performance there is a good chance your base timing is off

Change the ignition timing (retard it) so you get full travel of the spark lever. In time you will know where the maximum advance of the lever occurs without knock.
