While removing clutch & transmission from my 8BA I noticed gaskets between the bellhousing to motor & bellhousing to transmission... I tried to locate these gaskets form the usual suspects & I can't find anything - Maybe I'm using the worng search or are they available ?

Don't think there is sure a thing. Either someone thought it was a good idea for some reason and made them or they were used as shims to correct some alignment issue.

![]() These words of wisdom from the late, great Rumbleseat; Another used car lot trick.On 8BA transmissions: Loosen the 4 transmission to bell housing bolts several turns. Pry the transmission towards the rear and hold it back with a screwdriver driven between the trans and bell housing. Slip one shim 0.020" to 0.030", or a piece of a cruise dash plaque (they’re 0.030" thick), in between the transmission case and the bellhousing on the lower right corner only. Remove the screwdriver and tighten the trans bolts back up. This will cock the transmission main drive gear in the pilot bearing and will often reduce some clutch chatter for a time. This pertains to removing the phenomonen of clutch chatter. I cannot vouch for this method, nor do I advocate it, it is information I picked up off of the www, and I am merely offering it as a possible answer to your question. fwiw, Brian

There should be a gasket between the transmission case and the half bell/hogshead on the truck transmissions
Not trying to be a smart arse, but why would a gasket be needed there?

Thanks for the answers, I was wondering why a gasket would be needed there as well, Interesting, because of the oil pan cleanout plate, the engine might be out of a truck, the transmission is an early toploader 1934, transmission bell has already been ground out to fit the 10" clutch, this set up is in an old hot rod, was installed in the early 60's -
Okay so I should look for the gasket between the transmission case & the removable bellhousing, but not the engine & removable bellhousing.. they did a nice job on making those gaskets, they didn't look homemade ! Thanks again for the advice. |

Brian, I'm not sure why a gasket is used there, but all of the truck transmissions I've pulled apart have had them. The last one I pulled off this past Saturday has a Ford script stamped into the gasket material. The gasket material does cover the end of the counter shaft.

denns, how thick is the gasket material? If it has some thickness to it may have had something to do with getting pressure plate/clutch clearance with the 10 inch clutch.
