I have a 1928 roadster pickup with the emergency brake handle on the left side making it an AR. This car takes a lot of brake pressure to stop it. The truck is equipped, I believe, with a later version bell housing that contains a larger diameter brake pedal shaft than earlier model bell housings. Is there a difference in the dimension between the center of the brake shaft mounting hole and the center of the hole where the brake rod is attached on the earlier and later brake pedals??? If so, and if the distance on the earlier pedals is shorter, then there would be a greater mechanical advantage making the brakes easier to apply.

I just look quickly at several of each style that I have in the basement and there isn't any visible difference. The distance from the centerline of the pedal shaft to the center of the clevis hole looks to be within 1/10th of an inch in all of them.
My guess is that your truck could use a different style of brake shoe lining or cast iron drums. I know from my personal experiences, there are some types of brake linings that are naturally more "sticky" than others. The early brake system really gets a bad rap when in reality, it's not a bad system at all. It works quite well when everything is properly rebuilt and properly adjusted. |
