Can someone tell me what the correct air cleaner oil bath is for a 47 Mercury (convertible) Has original flat head 100HP V-8. A picture would be Great!! I have two but don't know if either is correct as they were in a box full of parts with the car.

Here's photo of my '47 Ford. Can't verify if they'd be the same.

Drbrown, I don't like being the bearer of bad news but your air cleaner is not correct for a '47 Ford.

The originalmair cleaner on my '47 has the domed top,as well. It now has a modern fiber element to eliminate the oil mess.

Here's a picture of one. There also was another version of the top that had several concentric rings embossed in the area around the wing nut.

Bob, per your instructions I just converted one to the paper filter. I made a couple of small changes, but it sure works nice and no messy oil.

I'd like to know what is "incorrect", shown in posts 2,3,6,8. To my untrained eye, I'd say they all look the same as what's on my 47. Also would like to know about that paper element conversion.

The air cleaner in post #2 is the style used on the later flatheads in the 50's. Not sure specific year the one pictured was used in.

Thanks... I've looked a little closer, and now I think mine does not match posts 2,3,6. Maybe mine is like post 8.

I'm not surprised the air cleaner in my '47 isn't correct. Also didn't know Lon5ie's was Canadian. Prior owner said a rebuilt '48 engine had been put in my vehicle and I assumed they re-used the '47's accessory equipment. As to my battery and alternator, I am aware of the electrical system's conversion, also by a previous owner.

Good to hear it, Tom. I did a bunch of them around here when the word got out that it could be done easily, and improve operation!

Thanks to ll...I can see that it was not as straightforward as I had hoped. I have one like the #8 post except it has several concentric rings close to the wing nut. I think I'll use that one. The other one I had is exactly like #2 so it appears it is for later years.
