Fuel line

Want to replace fuel line between sediment bowl and carburetor, is that made of anything special or do I just use 1/4 copper or brass? It's hard to tell what kind of material it's made of. Also what fittings will I request at the auto store or does the fuel line and fittings come as a kit?

buy the line from one of the suopliers they come with the ferules and are prebent properly..

I was going to do it tonight, need to take car to DMV tomorrow for their "assessment" (my 30 day window is up on Wednesday). So can I get them from auto supply store?

You can use 1/4 in copper as a temporary fix. You will also need two 1/4 in ferrules. The fittings on the ends are somewhat special. The is a shoulder that extends a little past the threads. Regular tube nuts are shorter and will not compress the ferrule enough to get a tight seal. A good auto parts store may have these nuts . Also you may find these at a good hardware store. If not, you can use the ones off the old line if you have it.

When you can, get the proper pre-bent steel line and fitting kit from one of the suppliers.

You can buy a length of the correct size brake line and two ferrules from the hardware or auto store. I assume you have the correct two nuts for the ends.

You can buy steel brake lines that are the correct diameter tubing. These steel tubing lines can be cut to length and bent to the correct shape . Ferrules may be available. you can't reuse the old ones. If you can use the old fittings you will be good to go. I haven't had any luck finding the correct fittings in my area for some time. Its best to just do as Mitch says above

Just got back from auto store they didn't have 1/4 but had 5/16, are there problems with using bigger size (keep in mind somebody on here told me there's never a dumb question). They also informed me I needed a tubing bender, is that something I can rent or possibly go to a mechanic and have him bend it?

You can, but please use a 1/4" steel line, which you hand bend to shape, and brass ferrules on the ends. Safer than copper (although I know many people who use copper and swear they have no problems).

Anyone have photos of the fittings for the 1/4 COPPER line--I may go that route until I can get the correct one from Model A supplier. Thank you all for your comments

You don't need to rent a tubing bender. As mentioned, the new brake line can be bent by had without kinking, unless you go too tight a radius. I didn't like the tight radius of the small tubing bender I bought from O'Reilly for $3.50, so I made my own bender out of 2 1/2" aluminum rod. For my 50 Studebaker I needed a couple larger radius bends for the new steel line for the vaccum advance I installed a couple days ago. I replaced an ugly copper line that was hand bent.

I used my homemade bender for the tight bends around the front of the head, and I used a couple different size V belt pulleys for the two large radius bends around the carb. V belt pulleys make great benders for several sizes of steel and copper lines. I keep an assortment of pulleys in the basement. You can buy them cheap at swap meets and garage sales.
