New Guy with a 39

I recently purchased a 39 Deluxe, I guess I'm getting back to where I started in 1967. My dad bought a 40 Mercury when I was 15 for he and I to work on. He had done a couple Model A's. We had fun with the Mercury for a few years until I purchased a 65 Chevelle SS. From there things changed for me. I had interests in cars, boats and planes. I started racing boats and moved to Oshkosh, WI going to work for a Outboard engine manufactures Racing Division in 1975. Oshkosh is pretty aviation oriented so I was then able to pursue my passion for airplanes. I have been restoring and flying antiques since then. Currently flying a 1946 J3 on floats. But, my grand kids are showing an interest in cars so I decided to switch directions and get back into cars.
Finding the Ford Barn has been rewarding. The information here saves a new bee like me an enormous amount of time. I have been spending hours going over the information found here. So, my long windiness brings me to my question. There was a heater in the car and I'm not going to use it so took it out. I have seen lots of pictures of the heaters and their values but all are a little different so is this really a 39 heater and what would sort of price would it valued at? I have the switch too.

My 39 heater doesn't look like that. mine has horizontal, silver blinds.

I understand that it was an option in 39 and dealer installed. Probably what they had locally

It looks like a Rex aftermarket hot water heater. Look on Ebay completed auction for value probably less than $50.00.If it was a Genuine Ford 1939-1940 hot water heater would probably been $300-$400.

Welcome to the FordBarn from a fellow '39 Ford owner. The heater you show looks like an after-market item. As I understand it, '39 Was the first year that Ford offered a hot water heater, I believe they were dealer installed accessories. Our '39 CS had a later ('42 style) heater that I think may have replaced the original one as the defroster vents were in the car. I removed the heater and filled the holes in the dashboard (firewall) before I had the car painted. Enjoy your '39.

Most 1939 Fords came with a hot air or manifold heater. It was less expensive than the hot water heater. The aftermarket heaters were usually installed after the car was a couple of years old. They were provided by many vendors and installed ny independent mechanics.

Here is a picture of a correct 1939 hot water heater. The left door has a restriction to keep it from opening all of the way, so it won't interfere with the gearshift. The kick guard on the rear, lower left is solid and the door handles are rectangular.

Being able to spend time with the family working on your '39 will be a fantastic experience I hope. Like you I have many fond memories as a child working on a wide variety of stuff my dad would drag home.

There is a very slight aviation current running around here, I have a past life where I flew hot-air balloons professionally, and several others have the flying bug.

As you know we love pictures, so could I gently suggest we'd love to see some of your Cub or your race boats. Since that's a little off topic, you could create an album from your profile page and load them there.

A good tip is to add a location to your profile, it doesn't need to be overly specific, but it can help others point out vendors or other things of interest to you locally.

Anyway, I hope this doesn't seem like I'm lecturing, just trying to send a friendly WELCOME.

I had a 1940 heater with the switch that I sold for $400 a few years back. It looked just like the picture that TomO showed, but the door had no restriction(Column shift in 1940)
