Door Hindge Pin Removal

Does anybody has some good tips for removing the door hindge pins on my 31 S/W sedan. I've tried heat, penetrating oil and a hindge pin removal tool with no luck. Finally drilled out pins on front door as I have extra front hindges but don't want to nrisk damaging rear hinges as I have no extras.

I hear the 50% acetone and 50% trans fluid is supposed to work really well.

Drilling almost to the full diameter, at least 1/2 way up and using a drift pin to hammer it out.

I'm going through the same issues. I got a pin removal tool from Brattons and thought my problems were supposed to be over. The tool is heavy and looks like it should work but unfortunately it wasn't that effective. It looks like a heavy duty C clamp. The top of the tool has a collar that slips over the top of the door hinge pin. The bottom is a threaded bolt with a recess in the center to accept one of the three different sized pins that are supposed to drive the hinge pin out. When you start tightening the bolt the drive pin "walks" across the hinge pin and onto the hinge itself. Further tightening does not end well. The drive pin mushrooms on the end and bends or breaks. I have destroyed two of the pins. The last one sheared off flush with the recess in the bolt. I am not going to spend anymore time dealing with what I consider to be an inferior product. I have noticed some of the other vendors sell a pin removal tool that looks a little more like a conventional puller. It has two bolts that extend down from a bar that rests on top of the hinge. Tightening the bolts pulls up the drive pin which engages the hinge pin. Would one of those hinge pin removal tools be more effective? I had not previously considered drilling the hinges. When you drilled yours do you feel you did any damage to the hinge?

I have one of those mini Oxy-Acetylene sets. I have never
welded with it, but it has been extremely useful for helping loosen nuts and bolts.

Nope the hinge showed no damage. Took my time. lined up the bit to be sure it was going straight and use much oil to lube the bits.

You might even try to just drill a short hole for pin of the remover to sit in so it won't walk.

I had the same problem worked 6 hours with heat oil and big hammer
I then took a break went to supply store and spent 20 bucks on a air
hammer kit First pin jumped out 6 ft into the air Best 20 I have ever
spent Don't force it get a Big Hammer :-)

A tip: when you install new pins, grind down a bit those ridges at the top, so the pins will be easier to remove in the future.

BTW, has anyone ever seen a hinge pin that was too loose instead of too tight, and moved out of place on its own?

Doug you can get oversize pins for that..

i agree drill out the pin top side and bottom side then punch it through.

no one that I know of makes oversize door hinge pins for the SW bodies. I made my own pin press years ago. I see Snyder`s come out with one just like what had I made. part #A-46335-t the trick is to use a real short pin to get the pin on the move and I do mean short no more than 1/8" or so sticking out of the press and than change to a longer pins as you go. I even use a piece of leather on top of the hinge to protect the paint on a finished vehicle. I have not come a crossed a pin yet that would not come out. that is as long as someone has not screwed the pin already.

Gregg gave me some old propane torch that has air & fuel adjustments & really gets HOT! I forgot the brand, but it'll heat the fat end of a gearshift in a jiffy, without oxidizing it & makin' it UGLY.

the reason the pins don't come out easy is because over the years a grove is ground into the hinge pin, and when you try to pull the pin the edge of the grove on the pin hangs up on the hinge and wont come up some times it helps to swing the door open and closed as you try to remove the pin

This may be your only method. The above post gives reason why.

Success!! All hinge pins are out. A combination of drilling, air hammer, hammer and punches, heat and lubrication. Thanks for the advice. No one technique seemed to work on its own.
