Default 1939 Starter

Last night I was working under dash. When trying to pry my way back out I hit the starter button and yikes it cranked. I thought oh no I left switch on - but no switch and key were in off position.

I think only power is going to starter as the electric seems off, cause I have an electric fuel pump and can't hear that pumping.

Is this normal?

Advise?

Yes, that is normal. The starter button is a "ground" type, it will crank the starter motor when the ignition switch is "off" however, there is no "juice" going to the coil when the ignition switch is in the "off" position so, the car won't start but, if the car is in gear, it will "bump" when you hit the starter button.

When you push the starter button you ground the starter to start the car.
You must have touched the wire on the button under the dashboard
This becomes intertesting if the car is in gear.
Dont ask me how i know.
Always disconnect the battery when working under the dash or on electrical items.
All the Best.

If you want to have some fun. When I was a teen, I had one head off a pickup, had my nose about a foot from the pistons, reached over and hit the button on the selonoid and the key was on, the engine started with head on the other side, BOY, those pistons go up and down fast when your face is about a foot from them. Another old trick was to fake running out of gas with your girl. If she wasn't hip or aware (many weren't) some secluded place on a back road you'd fail to start the car blaming the gas gauge. Now... we have time to talk, its too far to walk. So we'll wait 'til somebody shows up. Then, or whenever we want, hey it wants to run, starts right up. Time to go. ;-)

Guess this is another good reason to have a battery shut-off switch. I have also hit the floor button on occasion while working on under-dash stuff. It does startle the hell out of you. Thinking about putting a kill switch and or move starter button under the dash where that cant happen. Also gotta stop thinking about it and do it! LOL

For a date they do not have to be smart, just good looking and built. When you marry you may want a good looking, built and smart. LOL
