Default 41 Ford Transimision vs 39?? Vent opening??

I have a 41 ford stock transmission with a blown second gear and I have replaced it with a new one I located about 5 years ago. The question is the 41 gear case vent sits right at the top of the gear housing. The other transmission (year unkown) has a vent path that is part of the casting and runs from the top of the gear case to about 2/3 the way up the bell housing with a very small opening for the vent.
Two questions
1) What year transmission had the vent casted in the gear case?

2) Any pros or cons for one vs the other?

thanks in Advance
bob

Look for a VIN stamped on the bellhousing. Decoding it will tell you what you have. Then you can decide what to do.

I believe you will find the cast vents are 1940 and the steel pressed in style is later. There is no advantage to either.

I think Ford got away from the cast in vent in order to make it easier to clean the vent. The passageway for the cast-in vent is hard to clean, and that's even when the trans case is out and fully accessible. The later top-mounted vent cap can be pulled straight out and cleaned of gunk or dirt.

1940 only, as far as I know. As pointed out the serial number will accurately date any original early V8 trans. Keep the old one...that's your car's primary serial number.
