high charge rate

Coming home from the July 4th parade in DC I noticed a steady 8 amp charge rate all the way home. It was normal the week before. I figured I left the lights on.
I but the battery on charge and it acted nearly up to snuff. Today I started it and it went to 8 amps, just a bit above idle. The car starts strong.The generator body stayed cool. Lights work fine. The only thing I haven't checked is the battery water.
