I'm thinking of trying these
http://www.rodtiques.com/catalog.php...lectors#IMAGES - any one have them? I have 6 volt 1939 Deluxe - current headlights are good for Stevie Wonder but not for me at night. |

Looks good, sounds good. But will they adapt easily?

I would suggest that you think very carefully before you convert your headlights to LED, etc..
The original Ford lens are made for a "pre-focused" bulb, LED and/or halogen put out a lot of light which goes nowhere.. I ruined a set of reflectors for my '39, converting them to halogen, had to have another set of reflectors silvered, then installed Painless' Bright Bulbs which fit the original sockets and are pre-focused to fit the lens. There are several company's, other than Painless, that sell original type bulbs with higher candle power.. A second option is to do what many drivers did during the '30's-40's. add accessory driving lights to the front end of the car.. Appleton had some very neat ones in the late '30's.. I have Appleton 45A's on the front of my '39. I converted my '36 to sealed beams in 1952. That solved the lighting issue on the '36.. A second word of caution... Don't try to add sealed beams behind your '39 lens,, It won't give you good light directed onto the road... I know three guys that tired that..

Blucar thanks that's the kind of feedback I was hopin for - these come with their own reflectors so I would assume/hope they are better focused for the road ahead.
I was hopin someone on here has them on their car and can tell of their experience. Im in no rush - once I get solid feedback one way or the other on here I will make a decision - separate running lights like u suggested is next option |

OK.. I reread the rodtiques ad.. The reflectors they are selling are chrome plated, not silver.. Chrome does not have the same reflectability that silver has.. The 37-39 Fords have an odd shaped reflector and lens..Are the ones that they are offering round or are they the original "tear drop" shape?
Lots to consider before shelling out the money...

To help with the night vision, I installed a set of "road lamps" on both our '39 LZ & '39 CS. The road lamps are Hi & Low beam and project a nice beam of light for a good distance.
![]() ![]() I got the road lamps from a place in New England but the contact information in the garage and I can't remember the name of the place. If you are interested in them, I'm sure you can Google "Road Lamps" and find some that will work.

The '39 CS is still 6 Volt Positive Ground. The '39 LZ was converted to 12 volt negative ground. You can get 6 or 12 volt bulbs.

If anyone has a good source for Road lamps or Driving lights that they have personal experience with, and would buy again if the occasion arose, could you please post details here? I have pondered this same issue with my 36 and would rather avoid modifying the original headlamps.
I have searched for Road Lamps and Driving Lights and there are plenty of options, but real world experience is key. Stock 6v/Pos Gnd. Like the sound of what Vic has with the Hi/Lo beam that can be used in conjunction with existing headlights. |

How are you wiring the additional lights in? I would think this would put a lot of load on the existing wiring. Would suggest a separate circuit and switch or use the existing switch through a relay to the headlights.

You could tap into the high beam side with a relay and then they would only come on when you really need them, done this to my pickup.

You can run sealed beam units behind the glass, but the original glass needs to be replaced with a kind of look alike with much less flutes to stop incorrect light defraction.
